The world of printmaking has long captivated me. Since my first art exhibition in 2023, of 50 paintings and 100 drawings, I came away with a desire to explore the line, the form, and the story of what these drawings mean to me.
I find Lino cutting to be a therapeutically, engaging art form. Working daily and educating myself in the making of the drawing on the matrix, then carving the block with tools that have sat idle for so many years in my studio; I bought them in Geneva in an old art store down the BackStreets, on a winter’s day off from filming.
The whole process of making the print has an alchemy that I have only just begun to fully explore. The drawing, the carving, and then the printing. Holding your breath, as you reveal the work at hand —each print its own emotion of story.
My wife, Keely, loves flowers. Our home, affectionately named Orchid House, is always adorned with their beauty and hers. The kitchen table which we have sat around for the past 30 years as a family has always had a bouquet of tulips at her center.
Tulips are flowers that hold much history and emotions for me.
In the short space of nearly a year since my first art show, I have had the privilege of meeting and learning from some very fine artists, who inspire me with their quiet passion. My darling Keely has allowed me to use our kitchen table for my new print explorations, “kitchen table art” I call it.
In creating this print called “Malibu Tulips” I hope it finds its way into your hearts on this St. Valentine’s Day.
Love and only love,
PB
